Chair tax
Kenneth Breivik, president and CEO of Nehemiah Communications in Columbia, suggested a threshold for taxation of business property. He said small-business owners who lease space and own a small amount of furniture and computer equipment should not be forced to go through the hassle of paying taxes on these items.
Regardless of the age of the property, the tax rate never dips below 10% of the value, he said.
"It doesn't make sense until you're dealing with large dollar figures," Breivik said.
He added: "In South Carolina, the fact that as a business owner you can't ever really own your own chair is ridiculous."
Breivik said he was pleased to see the cleanup effort in process.
"We judge so many legislators based on the laws they pass, but these legislators are trying to clean up the laws on the books," he said. "I think it's the most noble thing they could do."
